When Jean got back to the mansion, she went straight to her office and typed up the following email.

From: Grey, Jean
To: Frost, Emma; Summers, Scott
Subject: Relaunch


I know you've had personal business to attend to, and now the holiday, but as soon as you're ready to talk about it, I think we're ready for a well-publicized team launch. This is a crucial window to remind everybody out there that the Xavier Institute matters, that we're there for all mutants who need us, that we're not beholden to SHIELD.

Here are some preliminary suggestions for personnel:

Scott Summers (Cyclops) -- X-men Field Commander
Emma Frost (White Queen) -- Co-Deputy Field Commander; Headmistress, Xavier Institute
Jean Grey (Phoenix) -- Co-Deputy Field Commander; President, X-Corporation, International
Henry McCoy (Beast) -- Chief Scientific Consultant
Logan (Wolverine) -- (Best he is at what he does???? Is there a word for that?)

I also suggest the following promotions from the junior squads:

Peter Rasputin (Colossus) -- Training and Development Officer
Laura Kinney (X-23) -- Tactical Strike Technician

Auxiliary/Backup Team Members:

Bobby Drake (Iceman), Theresa Cassidy (Siryn), Doug Ramsey (Cypher), Jubilation Lee (Jubilee -- I heard a rumor she was depowered, but has anyone talked to her lately?), Rachel Summers, Wanda Maximoff.

I'd like to bring up Lorna and Alex, but I think they've made their wishes well-known.

I haven't made a definite statement on this subject, by the way, to anybody but the two of you and Hank. I'd like to know that I'll have your support on this before I move forward.

I think you can see, I've tried my best to be fair.

Obviously, any amendments or additions you have to make are welcome.

After hitting send, Jean wrote a much shorter email.

I'm setting things up in my old office. Stop by anytime.

After Peter received and read his email, he decided to go by Jean's office. He was quite looking forward to their talk - he knew that she was looking to relaunch a new X-Men team, and this was exactly the opportunity he had been waiting for. He was extremely interested in becoming more involved with the team, and he hoped that was what this talk would be about.

But he mustn't be too hasty, he reminded himself, or get his hopes up to high. It could be about something completely different. And so he tried calm the smile on his face and even out the bounce in his step as he headed to her office.

He knocked loudly, but politely, and waited for a response.

Peter must have been waiting for the message, or else he was just around, but in any case the knock came quickly. She didn't know Peter well, but somehow she recognized the combination of strength and even patience in the knock as belonging to him.

Jean straightened the sweater that she'd been fidgeting with, and turned her chair to face the door.

"Come in," she said.

Peter opened up the door, and poked his head in. "Hello, Jean," he said, smiling warmly, then realized something. "Or should I be calling you Miss Grey. I can call you Miss Grey. Can I come in?"

He came into the room at her nod, and took a seat. "You wished to see me?"

"It's so good to be back. It's very good to see you. Tell me about yourself. Tell me what you've been doing."

Peter smiled warmly. It had been some time since he had seen Jean, had really spoken with her. Probably not since Disney.

Disney, when he had almost slept with... With Jean's lover. Ex-lover, anyway. And. Oh.

"Doing?" Peter asked, and almost blushed, but pulled off a calm smile. "There is not too much to tell," Peter said modestly. "I have been doing some training, and helping out around the school. I am dating Jean-Paul Beaubier. All is fairly well. And yourself?"

Peter smiled. "And you? How have you been?"

"Good," she said, "I'm good, I'm -- getting settled in. I bought a car. . .how do you feel about the X-men?"

"I owe them my life," Peter said without hesitation. "I believe in what they do, and what they stand for. I am very loyal to them."

Jean nodded. "All right. . .okay. . .that's great. I guess what I'm asking is -- how do you feel about your own place with the X-men?"

She couldn't help noticing that all of his statements about the X-men were in third person. She couldn't help remembering Jean-Paul's opinion that Peter would come to the X-men if asked, but that it wasn't going to be his own idea.

She didn't want to ask anybody to take on a responsibility if it wasn't their own choice but. . .well, didn't being a leader mean having to do that, pretty much every day? Scott spent a lot of time thinking about things like this, to the point that she used to tease him about. Now she wondered if she should have spent more time on such thoughts, herself.

Peter shifted uncomfortably. He wasn't very good with at speaking out about himself. "I wish I could do more," Peter said softly. He looked at Jean. "I want to. Here, at the Institute, with the X-Men... it is my home. It is where I belong. And I want to help any way I can."

Maybe Jean-Paul was right. Maybe Peter was just going along with what was expected of him. Jean really didn't want to sound like she was giving orders.

She sighed.

"How about -- " she said, "How about you give me a for-instance? How do you see yourself wanting to help. Tell the truth. Please."

"For instance?" Peter asked, blinking. Then he frowned slightly. "Do you doubt me? My intentions? You do not think this is what I want?"

He looked down at his hands. "I want to help better mutants lives. I want to help save them. I want to fight against those who work against us. For instance." Peter thought about the way things had been at home, in Russia. The way their kind was rounded up, put in camps. The life he barely escaped. "I will do that, however I can. Whether it is with the X-Men or not. Though," he added on quickly, "the X-Men would be my first choice."

Jean might have even clapped her hands, like a child who was excited from having to sit still for too long.

"I knew it!" she whooped and jumped to her feet, giving him a little hug. "Then it's settled. Right? It is settled."

Peter hugged her back, gently, though he was a little confused. "Settled. What is settled. Are you..." Peter pulled away from Jean, and looked down at her. "Are you asking me to be an X-Man?" he asked, but a wide smile was already crossing his face.

I have to say first that I can't agree more with the sentiment. It's been a fractious time recently, and a re-organization would be a good message to send.

The primary roster sounds solid. I'd venture that Logan would prefer to be left off any official lists, but if we need to stick a badge on him and a title, I'm sure we'll think of something.

As for promotions, I don't have any issues with Peter moving up in the ranks. I am, though, reticent on the subject of Laura. At the moment, with her integration into the Institute still progressing, I'd feel more comfortable with her in an associate role, rather than one more public. But that's just my take.

I haven't spoken to Jubilee in some time.

The rest all sounds good.

I'm deferring to Scott on final roster choices, of course, just as I'm deferring to Emma on the running of the school. I'll refrain from making personal slams on any current or former team members, and would appreciate the same from other quarters.

I'm already planning to meet with Peter and Logan, and I'll leave the two of you to get in touch with the others, or not, as you'd see fit. I would like to speak to Laura, though. You two certainly know her better than I do, and I don't question your assessments; on the other hand, she's an awfullly powerful mutant, if what I understand is true, and I'd like the chance to get to know her before we make a final decision.

Is there anyone else from the junior team that either of you would recommend for consideration?

I can make a thorough assessment of possible personnel and distribute it amongst the three of us soon, but there shouldn't be too much different than what's on the table at the moment.

There are a number of raw nerves around the mansion these days (including my own, I admit). I think we should all do our best to keep any disagreements to ourselves as much as possible and hash this out quickly and get the information out right away. As you said, Jean, clearly Lorna and/or Alex are off the table, and I expect that should be all that needs be said about it.

As for more recommendations, given the aid he gave in Atlanta, I would have nominated Jean-Paul, but considering his more recent affiliation with Senator Kelly... well, it's not that I don't trust the young man himself, it's the company he keeps.

Otherwise, I'm finding myself a more strident proponent of a smaller, leaner more mobile field team.

I echo Scott's opinions for the most part. However, are we certain that we should ally ourselves with Doug Ramsey? He is currently romantically involved with a known member of the Brotherhood.

Logan, I'm sure, will wish to give himself a title.

I've spoken with Jubilation recently, actually, since she was kind enough to donate money to the scholarship fund set up for the late Brittany House's son. If she is depowered, she has mentioned none of it to anyone close to her. Of course, we have Cerebra and can make certain if she is or is not before allowing her on the team, should we choose to do so.

Lorna can go to hell, and I wish Alex nothing but the best.

I think something like this would sound better coming from Scott rather than you, Jean. No offense, but otherwise it does appear as if you've moved into the mansion and are not only trying to take what we have worked so hard to accomplish here and ruin it, but it displays you in a poor light. I think we all know that everything has always sounded better if Scott was the one to actually say it.

P.S. I'm uncertain if Laura should have such a high promotion. If we do that, we might as well have Wanda Maximoff leading a separate squad as well.
